A two-alarm fire in Capitol Heights caused MARC and Metrorail trains to suspend service Monday morning, according to Prince George’s County fire officials.
Prince George’s County firefighters responded to the 2000 block Kenilworth Ave at 4:23 a.m. on Monday to a report of a fire outside. Prince George’s County said the fire spread to a commercial building and trailers nearby.
Prince George’s County firefighters elevated the fire to a two-alarm fire because of the weather. D.C. firefighters were sent to Capitol Heights to assist putting out the fire.
As of 9:47 a.m., officials said the bulk of the fire was put out. Crews stayed on the scene to monitor any remaining hot spots.
MARC suspended service on its Penn Line between Union Station and New Carrollton Station and canceled at least two trains – Penn 419 and Penn 410 – because of a fire. Riders can catch the next available train and find service updates here.
Metrorail service was suspended between Cheverly and Minnesota Ave. because of the fire. However, service has been restored, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said before 7:45 a.m.
All Amtrak service can expect delays due to rail congestion and restricted speeds in the area.
“Customers may continue to experience residual delays in both directions,” Metro said.
Drivers should expect traffic in the area as fire crews say they will be working to put out the fire for an extended amount of time.
