Man pleads guilty to Boulder tree branch attack

DENVER (KDVR) — A 45-year-old man has pleaded guilty to assaulting an “at-risk” adult with a tree branch near Junction Place and Goose Creek Path in the city of Boulder in September 2023.

The man, identified as Derek Jordan, assaulted the victim, identified as Marius Suffian, with the broken tree branch as the victim was walking home from work, striking the victim more than a dozen times — including multiple times in the face and while the victim was on the ground — the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.

Suffian suffered serious bodily injury from the attack, including a nasal fracture and a complex facial laceration, with a laceration to his tear duct.

Jordan, who the Boulder Police Department said at the time was believed to have been living amongst the city’s unhoused community, is now facing a stipulated range of 25 to 32 years in state prison after pleading guilty on Thursday to one count of felony first-degree assault of an at-risk person, according to the Boulder DA.

The Boulder DA said Suffian and his family were supportive of the guilty plea with the sentencing range. Jordan was restrained by a bystander prior to the arrival of BPD officers and is set to be sentenced on Monday, Nov. 3.

“Due to the nature of this unjustified and senseless attack, community members and police officers quickly responded to support the victim,” said DA Michael Dougherty, in a statement. “The person responsible for this brutal assault was quickly arrested and, with this guilty plea and sentence, he will be held fully responsible for his actions.”

Jordan was remanded into custody pending sentencing, the Boulder DA said.
