A man was pinned and killed after a wall collapsed on him at a Coconut Grove home that’s under construction on Monday, authorities said.
The incident happened at a home near the 2900 block of Southwest 22nd Avenue.
Miami Police officials confirmed the man was pinned by the collapsed wall and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was later identified as 29-year-old Jorge Esteban Rojas Rodriguez. He would have celebrated his 30th birthday next week.
A man who lives nearby said he heard a commotion coming from the construction site at the home.
“I heard a loud like yell, but like not a normal yell, a very strange like desperate-type yell, and I heard like a yell and a thump like at the same time,” he said. “Then I saw this one worker go in there and come back out, and then nothing else came of it. Then I come out 30 minutes later and I see the police are here find out that the wall had fallen on the guy.”
A work van from J and M Primos Construction was outside the home and the company’s owner confirmed they were working on a demolition project there and that the victim had only been working there a couple days.
A representative of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was at the scene speaking with workers who were there when the wall fell. NBC6 has reached out to OSHA and was waiting to hear back.
The incident remains under investigation.
