A man was found dead in a grassy median of Fairfax County Parkway Tuesday morning, police say.
The man was around 50 years old and was found between Rugby Road and Old Plains Road in Fair Oaks, Virginia, according to investigators.
What investigators don’t know yet is how the man died.
Chopper 4 captured the moments Fairfax County investigators could be seen scattered around the parkway. Multiple evidence markers could be seen on the highway and in the median.
“He does have visible trauma to his body,” said Capt. Jesse Katzman, Commander of Public Affairs with Fairfax County police. “We are not sure how the trauma occurred or how that individual ended up in the location that he is.”
Fairfax County police say a driver called 911 after seeing the man’s body. When police got to the scene just after 10 a.m., they found the unidentified man dead.
“The body was discovered in one of those low points, so it was very difficult to see,” Katzman said. “We’re not exactly sure how the community member would have seen that body, but we’re very thankful that they did.”
Fairfax County police could be seen going up and down the highway looking for clues and taking pictures in the middle of the road.
Police say it’s not clear if the man was hit by a car.
“The individual may have been struck by a vehicle. Of course, if that is true, there are no vehicles that did stay on scene. That would be a working theory,” Katzman said.
Fairfax County police say there were no street cameras, so detectives closed down the section of rugby road to walk through parts of the median and nearby neighborhoods to see if anyone had information about what happened.
“The pathway behind me does lead back behind homes that may have some sort of video footage, so that is obviously part of their investigation,” Katzman said.
Fairfax County police said it wants those with information that could help with the investigation to call.
