A 95-year-old man was killed while looking underneath his vehicle after it stalled in the middle of a northwest suburban road when him and his car were crashed into by another driver, authorities said.
Around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, a 95-year-old man from Palatine was driving westbound on Lake Cook Road just east of Quentin Road in Deer Park when his vehicle broke down and became disabled in the center lane, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Witnesses told investigators the man exited his vehicle and began looking underneath the engine area, authorities said.
While he was under the car, a westbound vehicle driven by a 30-year-old man from Cary struck the stalled vehicle from behind, authorities said.
The crash caused major injuries to the 95-year-old, authorities said, and he died at the scene.
Around 3:30 p.m., aerial footage captured by NBC’s Sky 5 helicopter showed several emergency vehicles blocking traffic in the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road in Deer Park. Two crashed vehicles could be seen in the video alongside an ambulance, fire truck and several emergency responders.
The 30-year-old driver was transported to a local hospital alongside a 30-year-old woman from Arlington Heights who was a passenger in his vehicle, authorities said. Both were initially listed with non-life-threatening injuries.
A passenger in the stalled vehicle, a 77-year-old woman from Barrington, was also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
A school bus occupied only by a driver was sideswiped during the crash, authorities said. The driver was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
