Police are engaged in a standoff with an armed suspect following a manhunt early Sunday morning.
Details surrounding the incident were limited at first; however, just before 9:45 a.m. Sunday, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that officers responded to a radio call of a man with a rifle firing rounds in the 300 block of North Myers Street.
“Officers encountered a suspect, at which time there was an officer-involved shooting,” LAPD said on X. “The suspect fled and a large perimeter was established.”
By 6 a.m., officers had established a perimeter around a set of railroad tracks between the Cesar Chavez Bridge and the 101 Freeway along the L.A. River, the river being the border between Boyle Heights and downtown Los Angeles.
According to Los Angeles Police Department officials, an officer-involved shooting took place in the 300 block of North Myers Street shortly before 5:40 a.m. Sunday. That area is located between the 101 Freeway and the 1st Street Viaduct – about a block south of where the massive law enforcement investigation appeared to be focusing its search efforts on. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was struck.
Multiple officers, SWAT Team members and LAPD airships were seen in the area searching for the suspect as the sun rose on Sunday morning. No details surrounding the suspect’s identity were immediately released.
As of 7 a.m., the standoff was still underway. It appeared as though at least five to six people who were underneath the bridge had been detained between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m., but officers had yet to clear the scene by sunrise, indicating they may still be searching for the alleged shooter.
Shortly before 8 a.m., LAPD Cpt. Mike Bland confirmed to KTLA that the investigation was primarily focused on the area under the 101 Freeway and that six people were in custody; however, authorities did not know whether the shooter was in custody.
The department’s 9:40 a.m. update indicated that no officers were injured, and that investigators were still working to determine the six detainees’ involvement.
Some surface streets and 101 Freeway off-ramps in the area have been closed due to the incident. Train service in the area may also be disrupted.
This is a developing story. Stay with KTLA for updates.
