Longtime Wheat Ridge restaurant prohibits unsupervised teens after series of incidents

WHEAT RIDGE, Co. (KDVR) — A popular Wheat Ridge restaurant says it will no longer allow middle and high school students in the restaurant without adult supervision.

The owners tell FOX31 that some of those students have been causing a lot of problems. The Apple Ridge Café at Kipling Street and West 38th Avenue has posted a notice on its doors and on a social media page.

It says middle and high school students are no longer permitted to dine in the restaurant without adult supervision.

“So, it’s really disheartening to see that we have to do this. Just the actions of a few are enough to make it so that we can’t let anyone come in unless they are supervised with an adult,” Apple Ridge Café Co-owner Scotty Jones said.

Jones says there have been several instances in the last three months where teens have been disrespectful to staff, stolen things and walked out of the restaurant without paying.

“We have met with the security resource officers over at the high school and middle school so they are involved. We’d really like to get parents involved. If they notice something that they can fix, that’s great,” Jones said.

The café has been around for more than 40 years.

“That’s unfortunate that probably a handful of teenagers ruined it for a lot of people,” Customer Janice Bua said.

Janice and her husband Frank are hoping the new rules regarding teens will help solve the problems.

The restaurant owners say they are working to identify the teens who have been causing the problems. They also said they are not trying to make this about punishing the kids and that they just want to fix the situation.

Wheat Ridge police tell FOX31 they are in touch with the owners to make sure those responsible are held accountable.
