A 16-year-old Long Beach Polytechnic High School student was hospitalized after he was shot Tuesday near campus.
Officers responded at about 10:30 a.m. to the 500 block of New York Avenue, where they found the 16-year-old with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body. Firefighter-paramedics transported the teen to a hospital.
The 16-year-old was shot by a man who approached a group teens and opened fire, police said. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
No arrests were reported Tuesday afternoon.
In a statement, the Long Beach Unified School District identified the victim was a student at Long Beach Poly High School.
“Local law enforcement has cordoned off the surrounding area to continue their active investigation,” the statement continued. “Our campus remains safe, and there was no impact on school instruction. As an added precaution, LBUSD School Safety will maintain an increased presence around our school.”
