- On a whirlwind Middle East trip, Trump addressed Israeli parliament and met with leaders of several countries to celebrate a deal to end the war in Gaza. He also met with the families of some of 20 Israeli hostages as their loved ones were finally released by Hamas as part of the deal’s first phase.
- Trump and the leaders of Qatar, Egypt and Turkey — countries acting as key mediators in peace negotiations — held a signing ceremony for the Gaza peace plan. Notably missing from the signing were the two parties expected to abide by the peace plan: Israel and Hamas.
- The government shutdown is in its 13th day amid an ongoing congressional stalemate over expiring health care subsidies. Today, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned the shutdown could be the longest in U.S. history, blaming Democrats for not compromising on the health care issue.
- Johnson said he was unaware of the details of the thousands of federal workers being fired by the Trump administration in a highly unusual mass layoff widely seen as way to seize on the shutdown to reduce the scope of government.
