A firefighter from Delaware was out on the job when he learned his own house was hit by lightning and then destroyed by a fire.
The lightning struck on Sunday, Nov. 9 at the home of John LeCompte and his family in Camden, Delaware.
His wife and children were able to make it out of the burning home safely, but their house was destroyed.
John is a longtime volunteer firefighter with the Dover Fire Department but he was at his full-time job across the Chesapeake Bay with the Anne Arundel County Maryland Fire Department when the fire happened.
Now, the Dover Fire Department is raising money to help the family while the insurance gets figured out.
“It’s difficult already when someone experiences a loss. It’s even harder when it’s one of our own and we try to stick together as a family,” Dover Fire Department Assistant Chief Chris Riale said.
As of Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser has reached over $27,000.
