Investigators have identified the man they believe shot and killed a woman in a Carlsbad parking lot on Friday night.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department said the suspect was 31-year-old Andre Anthony Matijasevic, who was himself killed later by law enforcement that same night. The woman’s identity has yet to be made public.
The incident began on Friday night, when, investigators say, Matijasevic fatally shot the victim in an apartment-complex parking lot in the 2300 block of Rising Glen Way. When Carlsbad PD arrived shortly before 10 p.m., they found. When officers arrived, they found the woman and began lifesaving measures but she died at the scene, according to Carlsbad Police.
“I did hear what sounded to be gunshots, and it was multiple,” neighbor Marina Scott told NBC 7 over the weekend.
Investigators determined the victim’s vehicle was stolen after the shooting and was driven to Orange County. Using license plate reader technology, the Newport Beach Police Department located the car. After a pursuit, and a traffic stop, Matijasevic was struck by gunfire and died from his injuries, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
No officers were injured in the shootout, according to OCSD.
It’s not yet known what, if any, relationship existed between Matijasevic and his alleged victim.
