Title: Electrical Design Engineer I / Designer

Sterling Engineering is looking for an Electrical Design Engineer I / Designer in Wayne, PA to support high-visibility utility projects for PECO. This role offers the flexibility of contract-to-hire or embedded employment. Candidates must be local to the Philadelphia area or within Delaware and Chester Counties, PA.
Job Duties:
- Evaluate project scopes, drawings, and specifications; perform design work using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
- Track project timelines and coordinate with internal teams to meet deadlines
- Apply for permits through PECO permit coordinators and ensure proper documentation
- Perform project scoping and design reviews, addressing field issues and design conflicts as needed
- Ensure compliance with PECO electric system standards, construction practices, and regulatory requirements
- Work on a variety of utility projects, from URD systems to infrastructure upgrades, that directly impact local communities
- Participate in site walkdowns with clients when required (typically once per project for engineers; more fieldwork may be expected for designers)
- Collaborate with engineers, municipalities, contractors, and customers while supporting process improvements and technology adoption
Qualifications:
- Prior experience with PECO is required (engineering degree not necessary if you have relevant utility design experience)
- Proficiency with MicroStation, AutoCAD, GIS, or similar utility platforms
- Strong understanding of PECO design standards, utility workflows, and construction practices
- Ability to work in changing site conditions and resolve design conflicts in real-time
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Detail-oriented with a focus on permitting, compliance, and documentation
Schedule:
- Remote flexibility with travel to local site visits
- Option to work from the office is available
- Engineer: Minimal fieldwork; occasional client walkdowns
- Designer: Fieldwork may be more extensive depending on project needs—up to 4 days/week at times, with periods of little to no fieldwork
