Investigation underway after woman dies in San Mateo County jail

(KRON) — Multiple agencies in San Mateo County are investigating the death of an incarcerated woman Monday morning at the Maple Street Correctional Center in Redwood City.

The 31-year-old woman, who was not publicly identified, was experiencing “what appeared to be a medical emergency” around 6 a.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said. Personnel working at the jail, including on-site medical staff, started lifesaving measures while EMS was dispatched. Despite efforts, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The general population pod the woman was housed in received a routine safety check a short time prior,” the sheriff’s office noted.

The cause of the death will be determined by the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office. Circumstances surrounding the in-custody death are being investigated by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, sheriff’s office and coroner’s office.

The identity of the woman will be released pending notification of next of kin, authorities said.
