
As Minnesota works towards 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040, battery storage is becoming more popular. MPR News reports “without batteries, the electricity generated by wind and solar farms must be used as soon as it’s produced. That’s not always when it’s most needed.” That’s where batteries come in, which store the electricity and release it on demand. For further reading, check out Twin Cities freelancer Brian Martucci’s piece earlier this week about a specific project Xcel Energy is working on at its Sherco Energy Hub, which includes battery storage.
Early detection is key to addressing a deadly tree-killing disease called Sudden Oak Death that’s been found in Minnesota for the first time. KTTC writes University of Minnesota researchers found the pathogen this summer. “The disease is caused by a pathogen called Phytophthora ramorum, which attacks oak trees and other plants. … Quick identification and containment remain the best tools for slowing the disease’s spread.”
Expect to see more Metro Transit Police Department officers on your commute this winter. KSTP reports Metro Transit is increasing their presence as a safety push. “Metro Transit says there will be extra officers on the Blue and Green lines … to provide a ‘highly visible police presence.’”
A missing-person case dating from the 1960s is finally closed. The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that authorities found no evidence of foul play in the death of 59-year-old Roy Benn, who disappeared in September 1967. His car was pulled from the Mississippi River in central Minnesota this past summer. You can hear from the fisherman who discovered Benn’s car via sonar in this WCCO TV clip from August.
