Despite rumors of a potential security breach after many Instagram users received unexpected password reset emails recently, the social media platform said there was no hack.
According to a statement from a Meta spokesperson, an issue on the Instagram platform, which “allowed an external party to request password reset emails for some Instagram users,” has been fixed, but did not pose any security threat.
“We want to reassure everyone there was no breach of our systems and people’s Instagram accounts remain secure,” the spokesperson told NBC Chicago.
Over the weekend, several users reported receiving password reset emails despite never requesting one. The news sparked numerous reports of a potential data breach.
It’s not clear exactly who sent the emails and how, but Instagram urged users to “disregard these emails” and apologized for any confusion caused.
