Infant's body found inside portable restroom in Mission Bay, police say

A suspicious death investigation is underway after an infant’s body was found inside a portable restroom in Mission Bay on Monday afternoon, police said.

A worker who was conducting routine waste removal found an unresponsive baby boy in a restroom near Dana Landing/Sunset Point and called 911 just before 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.

Shortly after SDPD, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego Lifeguards responded, paramedics pronounced the boy dead.

“It appears the child is approximately 27 weeks in the gestational period,” SDPD Acting Lt. Christopher Leahy said. His umbilical cord was still attached, the police department added.

The suspicious circumstances were reported to SDPD’s Homicide Unit, which is conducting a pediatric death investigation.

Police say they are still waiting for autopsy results to learn if the premature infant was stillborn or if he had any injuries. The identities of his parents are not yet known, according to SDPD.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

“Or perhaps, maybe the mother, you know, has a story to tell and wants to put clarity to exactly what occurred and why the child ended up in the portable restroom,” Leahy said.
