Illinois state senator's home struck by gunfire in Shorewood incidents

A suspect is in custody after two homes were struck by gunfire Tuesday morning in separate incidents in suburban Shorewood, including a residence owned by an Illinois state senator.

Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel, who represents Illinois’ 49th district, reported that her home was one of those struck by gunfire early Tuesday morning in a series of incidents that were investigated by police.

“In the early hours of Tuesday morning, my family and I experienced a deeply troubling incident when a shot was fired directly at our home,” she said. “I am grateful to Chief Arnold, law enforcement and investigators for their work detaining a suspect and working diligently to get to the bottom of this.”

The senator said that she and her family were not injured in the incident.

At this time, Shorewood police do not believe the shooting was politically motivated, according to a statement provided to NBC Chicago.

According to Shorewood police, officers had originally been called just before 5 a.m. to the intersection of Ca-Crest Drive and Highland Drive. No immediate reports of damage were taken at the time of that shooting.

Just two hours later in the 500 block of Bethany Drive, a residence was struck at least three times by a small-caliber weapon, police said. No suspects were taken into custody in that incident, and police continued their investigation.

A later inspection near the first incident revealed that a single shot had struck a home in the 500 block of Northgate Lane, according to Shorewood police.

No one inside either home was injured by the gunfire.

Later Tuesday, Shorewood police were able to identify a vehicle that was involved in the shootings, and a suspect was taken into custody, according to authorities. It is believed the same weapon was used in both shootings, police said.

There is no known connection between the residents of the two homes, and police have not revealed any motive in the case as the investigation continues.

No further information was immediately available. Anyone with additional information is asked to call Shorewood police at (815) 725-1460.
