This photo is important because it shows protesters blocking a vehicle outside the Broadview Immigration Detention Facility. Following a period of peaceful protest Friday, a vehicle turned in toward the detention facility. Protesters surrounded the vehicle, trying to prevent it from reaching its destination, hammering on the windows and doors of the vehicle. The image captures the tension between protesters and ICE agents in the early morning of what would soon lead to clashes between the two groups.
How did you get the photo?
Protesters were selective as to which vehicles they would block. If a vehicle belonged to an employee of one of the businesses in the office park, they would allow it to pass through. If they suspected it belonged to ICE officers, they would stand in front of the vehicle. In this instance, protesters were calling to one another that it was an ICE vehicle. They were standing in front of it and trying to push back. I got in as close as I could without putting myself in danger and tried to get an angle from above showing the size of the crowd.
