How Minnesotans celebrated Diwali

Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights at an event hosted by the Hindu Society of Minnesota. Sahan Journal reports “the five-day Diwali celebration is a time for families to gather, celebrate their cultural heritage, find spiritual renewal and mark a moment of new beginnings. … The festival is celebrated on the day of the new moon in either October or November, depending on the lunar calendar.”

Small businesses are among those feeling the impacts from the ongoing government shutdown. WCCO TV spoke to owners about how they are doing and reports “a new survey from Goldman Sachs shows that 72% of small business owners say keeping the government open is critical to their operations, but that’s not happening.”

A Minnesota asphalt company will be closing over a dozen facilities throughout the state causing nearly 300 employees to lose their jobs. MPR News reports “Rogers-based Minnesota Paving & Materials sent a notice to the state Department of Employment and Economic Development, announcing the permanent closure of 14 of its operations in the state. … The closures will affect 297 workers. The affected plants are set to close on Dec. 19.”

Parents are stepping up after vandalism hit a school playground. Bring Me The News reports “the nonprofit Heartwood Montessori School in Northeast Minneapolis says its playground was damaged over the weekend of Oct. 4. … The school’s Parent Involvement Committee has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 to repair and restore the play area.”
