Home healthcare worker steals blind and bedridden homeowners’ jewelry: Police

CLAYTON, Mo. – A home healthcare worker will appear in court later this week to face charges of stealing jewelry from two of her clients.

According to a probable cause statement from the Bridgeton Police Department, the crimes happened between Feb. 7 and Feb. 12 at a home in the 3700 block of Red Hawk Court.

Two gold chains and three gold wedding bands belonging to the homeowners had been stolen. Police learned the couple, one legally blind and the other bedridden, had hired two home healthcare workers around this time.

A detective searched pawn shop records and discovered one of the nurses, identified as Andrea A. Todd, sold a gold herringbone necklace, a gold wedding band, and gold hoop earrings to a particular pawn shop for $800.

Afterward, the victims’ daughter told the detective several more pieces of jewelry were missing: a gold bracelet with initials etched inside, a charm bracelet with six birth stones, a pearl necklace matching the earrings, and a pair of gold hoop earrings.

Police said the detective followed up with the pawn shop, took photos of the items sold there, and sent them to the victims’ daughter, who identified them as the stolen jewelry. An employee of the pawn shop told the detective that Todd tried to sell the bracelet to them, but the employee balked because he suspected the bracelet may have been stolen.

Todd agreed to meet with the detective investigating the case on Feb. 27 and, according to police, admitted stealing the jewelry from the home during an interview.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Todd in May with one count of stealing – $750 or more. Todd was issued a criminal summons to appear in court on Thursday, Sept. 25.
