After heavy snowfall struck areas south of Interstate 80 on Saturday, gusty winds could cause travel issues to start the work week.
According to the National Weather Service, those wind gusts could exceed 30 miles per hour at times, and could cause blowing and drifting snow Monday morning and into the afternoon hours.
The worst conditions will likely be seen in open areas, especially along interstates 39, 55 and 57 through the central part of the state, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team. Parts of LaSalle, Grundy and Kankakee counties could be impacted by the conditions.
Parts of Indiana could also be dealing with the hazardous conditions, including in Jasper and Newton counties.
Snow-covered roads, poor visibility and other issues could occur during that time, and motorists are urged to be prepared for sudden visibility changes.
Multiple crashes occurred on highways in the central part of the state during Saturday’s snowfall, including a fatal crash on Interstate 55 in Springfield that claimed the life of a 14-year-old Chicago resident.
Forecasters are warning of additional travel impacts Monday, with wind gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour at times during the morning and afternoon hours.
A warming trend should melt a good amount of snow in the days that follow, with highs soaring back into the upper-30s and low-40s starting on Tuesday.
