Grossmont College now offers degree in Artificial Intelligence

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Grossmont College launched its first Associate of Science Degree program for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) in October.

The community college shared that this program is the first of its kind to be offered at a California community college. While Grossmont said many community colleges offer certificates and courses in AI, they are the only program offering Applied AI.

“At Grossmont College, we’re committed to giving students more than just theory, we’re giving them tools to shape the future,” Grossmont College Career and Technical Education (CTE) Dean Javier Ayala said.

The degree offers zero-cost non-credit and low-cost credit courses to help prepare students for the job market. The track also teaches students ethical considerations in AI. The first 8 weeks of the program began on Oct. 13. With a cohort of 16 students.

San Diego is home to more than 70 AI focused companies, according to Grossmont Community College.

“With the rise of AI in San Diego’s technology community, and the launch of this program, Grossmont College has successfully identified, and responded to, a growing need for workforce development in artificial intelligence,” the school said in a press release.

The City of San Diego ranks among the top 20 markets for tech talent, according to a Coldwell Banker Richard Ellis (CBRE) talent report. The community college hopes their new program can prepare students for the growing market of technology and AI.

“The Applied AI degree is designed to be accessible, hands-on, and relevant, empowering students to turn their curiosity into innovation and meaningful careers,” Ayala said.
