CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — In a rematch of last year’s Section 2, Class D championship final, Greenwich bested Cambridge/Salem once again Saturday afternoon, this time by a score of 21-7, to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Cambridge/Salem, playing host to the Witches, came out of the gate strong, marching right down the field and taking an early, 7-0 lead on a touchdown run from Abraham Cushing.
The defending champs did not blink, and came right back down the field on their opening possession, scoring on a Ryan Ingber quarterback draw. The Witches failed to tack on the PAT, so Cambridge/Salem still maintained a 7-6 advantage.
The defenses took over from that point on. Kaden Bentley grabbed an interception for Greenwich on Cambridge/Salem’s ensuing drive. Nothing would come of the turnover, though, after Cushing made a crucial stop on fourth down for the home squad, which kept the score at 7-6 going into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Greenwich offense broke through in a big way in the final stanza. Ingber found Wyatt Jamieson in the end zone on a play-action pass to put the Witches in front. A successful two-point conversion extended their lead to 14-7.
In need of an answer, Cambridge/Salem started to find a bit of a rhythm early on its next series. But a tackle for loss from Greenwich’s Langston Hall on fourth down stunted the drive and resulted in a turnover on downs.
The Witches offense went right back to work, reaching the red zone. Will Weber capped off the drive with a touchdown run to put the game away.
