STUDENT HOUSING OK: Miami-Dade commissioners last week approved with no discussion allowing the issuance of $250 million in bonds that would add 820 beds of housing in Sweetwater for Florida International University students. The Miami-Dade County Industrial Development Authority was approved to issue the bonds for PRG-Casa Properties LLC to acquire 4.75 acres and build and equip the 21-story housing tower. The project is expected to be completed in August 2027. It would add 20% to FIU’s student housing supply.
BIG-TICKET TRANSIT: Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has been asked to study higher-priced Metrorail and Metrobus trips to serve late-night special events where Uber and Lyft now dominate transportation. Under dynamic pricing, transit fares would escalate with demand, with higher fares for bigger events. “People would pay $50, $60 for a set fare if it had certain times,” Commissioner Raquel Regalado told the county’s Transportation Committee. Last week, the full commission called for the study, with findings due in 60 days. The mayor is to look at demand at recent major events, how much more revenue a high-priced event service could generate, technological issues in using different fares at different times, the need to dovetail with event organizers, and what other transit already exists at the late-night events.
AIR FRANCE LOUNGE: A deal in which Air France will pay Miami-Dade County more than $17.5 million over 15 years and spend $7 million to $8 million to build and operate its own Miami International Airport VIP lounge won county commission approval without discussion last week. Air France will lease 7,370 square feet both inside and outside the third floor of Concourse H and have the club ready to open in 2028. Currently, the airline’s premium flyers get access to the Delta Sky Club. In concession fee payments, the airport is to be paid 18% of monthly gross liquor sales at the club and 10% of the gross of all other amenities.
UNITED FOR RUVIN: In an unusual showing of support, every single Miami-Dade County commissioner last week signed on to sponsor two resolutions to honor the memory of the county’s longest-serving elected official, Harvey Ruvin, who died in 2022 after 50 years of elected service. One renamed the North Dade Justice Center at 15555 Biscayne Blvd. the Harvey Ruvin Justice Center. The other urged the City of Miami to co-designate West Flagler Street at Northeast First Avenue outside the current county courthouse as Harvey Ruvin Way.
