Florida high school football player charged after hitting opponent with helmet: police

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A high school football player is facing criminal charges after police said he hit one of his opponents in the head with a helmet during a Halloween game in Florida.

The Fernandina Beach Police Department announced Tuesday that it had obtained an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Daniel Byers, a player from Bell High School.

Authorities said the incident unfolded mid-game, as Bell High School was facing Fernandina Beach High School. According to police, Byers “aggressively pushed” and then removed the helmet of a 15-year-old Fernandina Beach player. He then hit the 15-year-old in the head with his own helmet, officials said.

Referees and coaching staff rushed onto the field to intervene. However, officials said the incident resulted in fights breaking out on both sides of the field.

The situation was eventually brought under control by two Fernandina Beach police officers who were working the game, according to authorities.

Police said they escorted the Bell High School bus and players off Amelia Island as a precautionary measure.

The investigation remained ongoing Tuesday, and no further information was immediately available.
