Firefighter injured, another hospitalized in Wildwood fire

WILDWOOD, Mo.  — Fire crews responded to a fire in an attached villa in the 2500 block of New Point Drive on Monday morning, finding heavy fire spreading quickly to a neighboring unit and heat damage to nearby homes, officials said.

Before firefighters arrived, officers from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Wildwood Precinct evacuated residents from the area. According to police, an officer helped an elderly woman get out from a nearby duplex who was unaware of the fire.

“The quick, courageous response by the St. Louis County Police Department officers likely saved lives today,” said Metro West Fire Chief Brad Shelton. “Their ability to help residents escape harm’s way before we arrived was heroic. We are thankful for their partnership and proud to work alongside them in protecting our community.”

One Metro West firefighter was transported to a hospital for heat exhaustion and is expected to be treated and released quickly, while another sustained a minor injury.

The fire, which started shortly after 8:30 a.m., has been ruled accidental, but the exact cause and origin are still under investigation.

Metro West Fire Protection District thanked Central County Emergency 911, the Monarch Fire Protection District, the West County EMS & Fire Protection District, and the St. Louis First Responder Canteen for their assistance.
