Fire breakout in Watervliet attacks two homes

WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A fire broke out Wednesday on Seventh Avenue in the city of Watervliet. Two houses at 1326 Seventh Ave. and 1330 Seventh Ave. caught fire around noon.

The houses were next door to each other. The fire traveled from one house to the next because of wind, according to Watervliet Fire Chief Thomas Garrett.

There were eight adults and one child between both houses. The Red Cross is assisting. No one was injured, and everyone made it out safely.

“We have one State Office of Fire Prevention Control coming up to help us find out what started the fire,” said Chief Garrett.

Around 2:30 p.m., Chief Garrett said, “We’re still chasing hot spots inside the building. The roof collapsed on both buildings, so demolition is possible.”

NEWS10’s Tyanna Xavier spoke to Lynette Wray, who lived in one of the houses that caught fire. She said they were on the upper level and didn’t notice the fire was going until the person next door, whose house was also on fire, was telling them through the window, “Get out, get out, get out.” Once Wray realized what the person was saying, they ran downstairs and warned everybody else in the house to get out.

A neighbor across the street opened their doors to the families to help them to safety.
