FBI, Secret Service investigates $1.03M Voorheesville CSD cyber fraud

VOORHEESVILLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Voorheesville Central School District, New York State Police, and the FBI are investigating an alleged cyber fraud incident involving $1,000,000 from the district’s Capital Construction Fund. School officials stated on Thursday that an unauthorized transfer occurred on October 8.

Also working with the United States Secret Service and insurance providers, law enforcement, and the school district, it was reported that roughly $750,000 in capital construction funds have been recovered since the beginning of the investigation. District officials said that if the full $1,030,000 can’t be recovered, they would seek reimbursement through an existing cyber insurance coverage plan.

Since the incident, Voorheesville district officials have started reviewing internal procedures to strengthen safety against any future cyber attacks. The Board of Education is also working to solve the issue alongside law enforcement.

“The district extends its sincere appreciation to the law enforcement agencies for their immediate response, diligence and expertise in helping to recover funds and pursue those responsible,” a post on the district’s website said. “Their partnership and professionalism have been instrumental throughout this investigation.”
