A man who was detained earlier last week during a traffic stop involving the Florida Highway Patrol and federal immigration agents is being held at a detention facility in Colorado, his family said.
The family of 51-year-old Jose Cuellar told NBC6 that they heard from him for the first time on Sunday night, when he called to let them know where he was.
His children said this comes after five days of not knowing where he was or how he was doing after he was detained Tuesday while headed to a landscaping job in Davie.
Several men in work trucks were pulled over last week during what troopers described as “routine traffic enforcement.” Among them was Cuellar, originally from El Salvador, who was taken into custody by federal immigration agents.
Cuellar has an active family petition and is appealing a previous order of removal related to an asylum claim, the family said.
NBC6 has reached out to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for details about his detention and transfer and is waiting to hear back.
