The families of road traffic victims gathered on World Remembrance Day to remember the people that died in traffic deaths.
“We support each other and fight to end traffic deaths, so no other family has to join our club,” said Laura Keenan, Co-founder of Families for Safe Streets San Diego.
Speakers at the event honored family, friends killed in traffic deaths and called on elected officials to support policies aimed at reducing traffic deaths.
“We are asking the city to do three specific things that are cost-effective and proven measures. The first is to fix the fatal 15 which are the most dangerous intersections in the city of San Diego. These are all near schools. Second, is to reduce speed limits in school zones. We need to keep our kids safe especially given the recent deaths in our community and number three is to implement daylighting around our city which is painting red curbs within 20 feet of an intersection,” Keenan said.
City of San Diego Councilmembers Stephen Whitburn, Raul Campillo and Joe LaCava attended the event along with San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan.
“In District 3 and across our city, my office remains determined to work hand-in-hand with advocacy groups, community members and law enforcement to stop pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle tragedies before they happen.” City of San Diego, District 3 Councilmember, Stephen Whitburn said in a statement.
San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said she attended the event to support victims, their families and efforts to bring about positive change.
“Streetlight cameras and other cameras have allowed us to solve many murder cases and many attempted murder cases and many cases involving these kinds of crashes,” Stephan said.
After Sunday’s event people traveled across the San Diego region to place memorial signs at crash sites in honor of the victims who died in traffic crashes.
