Driver sought after grandfather killed in hit-and-run in Fort Lauderdale

A man was killed after a car hit him Monday night in Fort Lauderdale and did not stop, police said.

The hit-and-run happened at around 8 p.m. on West Sunrise Boulevard near Northwest 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale Police said.

Police and family members identified the victim as 70-year-old Johnnie Davis.

Davis’ family showed up to the scene Monday night, trying to get answers as to what happened to their loved one.

His daughter, Jazzlynn Simmons, told NBC6 that they live across the street and saw her father about an hour earlier.

Simmons’ daughter came out and saw her grandfather in the road, she said.

“My daughter was like, ‘wow, I wonder if that can be my grandpa?’ So when she came down here, it was exactly her grandpa, my father, dead,” Simmons said. “He’s of life and love, and I don’t understand how someone can hit my father and run like that. I just want justice for my father, and I wish someone would come forward. I just lost my mom November 6th. I’m very hurt.”

Ali Kahn, who works at a nearby shop, knew Davis and said the saw the aftermath of the hit-and-run and called police.

“It’s hard to see for me, I go close and I come back and call 911,” Kahn said. “He was a very good guy, friendly, senior citizen, every night he used to come and have some beer and he’d go home and relax.”

Police said it appears Davis was struck by a white pickup truck, but said they’re trying to determine the make and model.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 954-828-5726.
