Driver, dog survive I-70 rollover

WARREN COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is making safety changes after a truck rollover on Interstate 70 Thursday marked the third rollover this week at the same spot.

Jonathan Montgomery’s tractor trailer rolled over near the Stracks Church Overpass, where MoDOT crews have been working and lined the highway with concrete barriers.

Drivers complained about the narrow lanes and an S-curve in the area. In response, MoDOT on Friday shifted the barriers to give drivers an additional two feet of space and repainted lane markings.

The speed limit between Warrenton and Wentzville will also be lowered to 55 mph.

Some residents expressed concern that repeated crashes could damage the overpass. MoDOT said an independent bridge engineer inspected the structure and found no signs of structural issues.

Montgomery said he is still dealing with pain and some post-traumatic stress from the crash, but his dog, Mister, helped keep spirits up after the accident.

“The nurses, they loved on him, he loved on them, he played with them a little bit, he posed for pictures, so he totally forgot about the accident,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery’s arms and hands are swollen and scraped up. He is staying in a hotel before making his way home to Oklahoma, where he hopes to get back to work as soon as possible.

MODOT officials said they will continue monitoring the site as crews work to improve the I-70 corridor. MODOT also talked with the Missouri State Highway Patrol about increasing speed enforcement in the area.
