Doomsday Wrestling Presents: TEXSTRAVAGANZA!

Doomsday Wrestling, Houston’s longstanding, one-of-a-kind comedy wrestling show, took its final bow in March of this year. After more than 20 years of bringing over-the-top wrestling fun to the masses, the production called it a day following the death of its creator and manager, Greg Vallot.

Vallot, whose Doomsday persona was the legendary Tex Lonestar, was honored at that final show and he’ll be honored again when Doomsday goes into its archives for a special event which relives one of Vallot’s favorite shows. Bad Astronaut Brewing hosts TEXSTRAVAGANZA! Sunday, November 23. The event is a screening of Tex Lonestar’s birthday show, hosted by Doomsday’s perennial baddie Monty Del Monte. Some of Doomsday’s iconic wrestlers will make appearances and the celebration doubles as a fundraiser for Three Little Pitties Rescue.

“I think our goal from the beginning was to see how we can kind of keep the legacy – and we’re calling it the ‘Greg-acy’ – alive,” said Brandon Clements, a longtime Doomsday Wrestling performer. “Because obviously we lost Greg, we lost Tex Lonestar, we lost a character, we lost a good friend. But it was also someone who was not only immensely important to us, but also a very charitable human being and had a huge heart for us, but also animals and went out of his way to help out animals.”

Friendswood-based Three Little Pitties Rescue is an all-breed cat and dog rescue which focuses on fostering and adoption. Vallot worked with them in the past and they’ll benefit from show proceeds during the holiday season, a time when many folks feel charitable. But Doomsday isn’t returning in November to capitalize on those vibes. November is a significant month for the show. It’s Vallot’s birthday month and marks the anniversary of his passing. And, Doomsday’s first show was November 8, 2003.

“So, it just felt really natural to say, hey, his birthday is coming up. The anniversary of the show is coming up. Like we’d love to figure out a way to honor all of these things into one.  I think that’s kind of the thesis of the entire event, if you will, is just trying to honor his legacy and give every single dollar to charity.”

Clements offered a peek at the night’s events which will not include live wrestling. The action moves from the ring to the big screen.

“What (fans) can expect is a screening of one of our favorite shows, which was Tex Lonestar’s birthday show. Ultimately the show itself is themed around his birthday. But beyond that, it is a raffle as well. So, we’ll be accepting donations toward raffle tickets,” Clements said.

He noted several Houston businesses have donated raffle prizes and gifts to the event. Those businesses include Bayou City Pet Sitting, Bedrock City Comics, Watershed, Honeycomb Salon, The Secret Group, City Orchard, Wrestler’s Court and Bad Astronaut Brewing, the show’s host, which also hosted the final Doomsday Wrestling matches earlier this year.

“That money, again, goes straight to charity,” Clements reminded. “So, what (fans) can expect is some appearances by some Doomsday characters, a screening of one of our favorite shows, but also an opportunity to win some pretty cool stuff from some really honorable local businesses.”

Fan favorites who are confirmed to appear at TEXSTRAVAGANZA! include 110% AL, Brad the Rad Dad, Charlene Lonestar, Dirty Lips, Hypno Fist, Poundcake, Roachella, Salty Pete, Uncut Chuck Uncut, Val Catraz and Monty Del Monte, Doomsday’s veteran heel, who will host the night’s mayhem with footage purported to come from his own private vault.

“Yeah, he’s digging into the Doomsday archives to bring out the apparent ‘Monty cut’. And I’m still unclear as to what that entails. But just knowing the kind of pervert that that man is,” Clements said, trailing off to build the suspense. “I mean, I know that there’s definitely some surprises to be had from a viewing perspective, but he will ultimately be our host for the evening and kind of, you know, be the arbiter of what we go through that night. So, it should be a lot of fun, but also very unexpected.”

Maybe fans of the show didn’t have a Doomsday Wrestling event on their current bingo cards, but they seem very excited about the screening, Clements said. That the event will bring Houstonians together for fun, and help a local dog rescue in the process, would mean a lot to Vallot, Clements added.

“I think people are excited to see that the show will, in some form, continue to try and honor what Greg-slash-Tex, you know, went out of his way to build,” Clements said. “I think that right now we’re really dedicated to perhaps this being something that we can do every year, you know, to, to honor Greg and to show old shows and to really ultimately just go out of our way to try and remember everything that’s been done, that he has done. I think we’re all just excited to celebrate our friend.”

Doomsday Wrestling Presents TEXSTRAVAGANZA!, Sunday, November 23 at Bad Astronaut Brewing, 1519 Fulton. Doors at 5 p.m. with screening beginning at 6 p.m. $13.54-$59.75.
