DOJ sues Minneapolis Public Schools

The Trump administration’s fight against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has reached Minneapolis Public Schools. The U.S. Department of Justice has filed suit against the state’s third-largest school district, accusing it “of providing discriminatory protections to teachers of color in layoff and reassignment decisions,” specially “the district’s efforts to bolster its minority teaching ranks,” The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.

Federal raids continue to target Minnesota’s Somali community in what the Department of Homeland Security is calling “Operation Metro Surge.” Sahan Journal has published an explainer that examines how “Minnesota become a hub for people fleeing the chaos of the war-torn East African nation. … The answer is best explained by the culture of both Somalia and Minnesota.”

The St. Paul City Council will ask the state board that sets standards for officers to “conduct a thorough investigation” of officers’ use of force during a recent federal immigration operation,” the Pioneer Press reports. The Council’s request comes after a Nov. 25 ICE raid on the city’s East Side led officers to “tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets, striking members of the public.”
