The Chicago Cubs will be competing in the National League wild card round next week, and the team is putting tickets on sale for those games.
The Cubs, who currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres for the top wild card spot in the National League, are in line to host the best-of-three series at Wrigley Field beginning on Tuesday.
According to the team, the playoff ticket lottery closed on Tuesday, but a general public sale for wild card round tickets is scheduled to move forward on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.
Fans can still sign up for ticket lottery opportunities for future rounds of the playoffs, including the Division Series. That registration will remain open through Wednesday, October 1.
If the Cubs can clinch playoff games at Wrigley, it would mark the first time fans have been able to attend playoff games at the stadium since 2018, as the COVID-shortened 2020 postseason was played without spectators.
The Cubs clinched a playoff spot last week after a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, but they have now lost five consecutive games, leaving themselves at risk of having to go on the road for the first round of the postseason.
As things stand, the Cubs are lined up to potentially take on the Padres at Wrigley Field, but San Diego has trimmed Chicago’s lead to 1.5 games. The Padres currently own the tiebreaker over the Cubs thanks to a superior intradivisional record, with the two teams splitting their regular season series against one another.
The Padres could also still overtake the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, as they’ve won four straight games and the Dodgers have lost their last two. The Dodgers currently hold a 1.5-game lead over the Padres, but own the tiebreaker after winning the season series.
The wild card round is set to get underway on Tuesday, September 30, with the best-of-three series determining the team that will advance to the National League Division Series beginning on October 4.
The Cubs have two games left against the Mets before a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals to wrap up the regular season. The Dodgers have games left against the Diamondbacks and the Seattle Mariners, while the Padres will finish a three-game series with the Brewers Wednesday and then wrap up the season with a three-game set against the Diamondbacks.
