Crews cap 'significant' gas leak in Los Altos, evacuations lifted

(KRON) — Crews responded to a “significant” gas leak in downtown Los Altos Monday morning, the Santa Clara County Fire Department said. Authorities advised people to avoid areas of downtown as evacuations, which have since lifted, took place.

The leak at 286 State Street was reported by fire officials to the public just after 10 a.m. The fire department said an audible leak could be heard, “indicating a significant amount of gas escaping.”

Evacuations were in place for the area south of Edith, east of Foothill, north of Main and west of Second Street, SCCFD said.

The leak, according to a Pacific Gas and Electric Company spokesperson, stemmed from a contractor striking a 2-inch gas line during an excavation just after 9 a.m. Responding PG&E crews isolated and secured the leak within 20 minutes of arrival, the spokesperson said.

Police and fire departments worked together to facilitate the earlier evacuations.

PG&E estimated repairs to the line to be completed in the early afternoon on Monday.
