CPS releases 2026-2027 calendar with longer summer break

Start working on those summer plans.

Chicago Public School students will likely enjoy their typical amount of summer vacation days after last year’s shortened break, according to proposed academic calendars for the next two school years released by the district on Monday.

The current school year ends on June 4 and next school year is scheduled to start on Aug. 24, resulting in 81 days of vacation this summer. That’s more than the 67 days of break students got in summer 2025.

School started later in the 2024-25 academic year because of the Democratic National Convention, resulting in a slightly shorter break. In summer 2024, students also had 81 days of break.

The proposed last day of the 2026-27 school year is June 11, 2027. That adds up to 176 student attendance days with 14 non-attendance days for staff training, school improvement work and parent-teacher conferences.

Under the proposed schedule, students will continue to get a week off for Thanksgiving break, as well as a day off for the Congressional midterm elections on Nov. 3.

Spring break is scheduled from March 22-26, 2027.

If approved, this will be the sixth straight year in which the district kicks off classes before Labor Day.

The district, for years, opened its doors after the early September holiday, but began opening its doors earlier in the 2021-22 school year during the COVID-19 pandemic, aligning more closely with suburban districts and colleges and universities.

District officials said the latest calendars were developed with “extensive input” from school staff, parents, unions, students and community members.

The Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the proposed calendars later this month.

If the school board signs off, Chicago Public Schools would start before Labor Day for the sixth year in a row and have a longer summer break than in 2025.
