ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Jon LaPoint’s first season as the head coach of the Colonie football team has started strong, as the Wolf Pack improved to 2-0 on Friday night with a 27-17 win over Queensbury.
Colonie had to work from behind, as the Spartans cracked the scoreboard first on a two-yard touchdown run from Luke Mootz. That lead would not last long, though. Colonie’s Jackson Bearup hauled in a 58-yard pass for a touchdown – his lone catch of the game – from Steve Thomas Jr. to even the contest at 7.
Queensbury would counter that by driving into field goal range, where Jordi Donnelly converted on a 38-yard attempt to put the Spartans back in front, 10-7, heading into the second quarter.
The only score before halftime would come from the home side, as Thomas Jr. found Will Lockart for a nine-yard score to put the Wolf Pack in front, 14-10, heading into the break.
Queensbury received the ball to start the second half, looking to regain the momentum. It looked as though the Spartans did just that when Benjamin Sassaman won a jump ball for a big first down. The Spartans could not capitalize, though, as multiple tackles for loss and a penalty drove them out of field goal range.
After a punt, the Wolf Pack offense went right to work. Thomas Jr. connected with Cameron Frazier for a huge gain, setting Colonie up inside the Queensbury 10-yard line. On the very next play, Thomas Jr. would call his own number and take it in for the score to push the lead to 21-10.
In need of a rally, the Spartans looked to go to the air, but the Colonie defense was up to the task. Jaiden Henriquez grabbed an interception and took it 41 yards the other way for a pick-six to make this a three-score game.
Queensbury got one back when Marcus Gooden hauled in a 12-yard pass from Tyler Dorvee, but it was not enough, as Colonie took home the victory.
Thomas Jr. led the charge for the Wolf Pack, going 10-21 through the air for 225 yards, two touchdowns and two picks, adding 48 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts on the ground. Frazier led the receivers, hauling in seven catches for 154 yards.
With the win, Colonie improves to 2-0 on the season. The Wolf Pack return to action on Friday, Sep. 19, when they host Shaker for a Class AA clash.
