SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Travelers relying on coastal rail service between San Diego and Oceanside should prepare for disruptions later this month, as the North County Transit District (NCTD) announced a full suspension of its COASTER service on two consecutive days.
The temporary shutdown, slated for Oct. 25-26, is part of a scheduled maintenance window to allow crews to complete routine railroad work and tackle several major infrastructure upgrades along the busy rail corridor. Regular COASTER service will resume Oct. 27.
According to NCTD, these planned weekend closures happen periodically throughout the year to give construction teams safe and uninterrupted access to the rail line. While no passenger or freight trains will be running during the two-day closure, residents near the tracks should still stay alert. Test trains, construction vehicles and heavy equipment will be active throughout the weekend.
Work locations and key projects include:
- Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization – Phase 5
- Track maintenance near Santa Fe Depot and between Sorrento Valley and Rose Canyon
- Signal optimization in Carlsbad
- San Diego LOSSAN Rail Realignment Project at Los Peñasquitos Lagoon
NCTD reminds the public to only cross train tracks at designated rail crossings, even during service suspensions.
