SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — If you’re planning to take the train along San Diego’s coast later this month, you may need to make alternate plans.
North County Transit District (NCTD) has announced a weekend suspension of all coastal rail service on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21 to allow for critical maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.
The suspension will impact COASTER service between San Diego and Oceanside, with normal operations expected to resume on Monday morning, Sept. 22.
According to NCTD, these scheduled closures are essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the rail system. The work planned for this upcoming closure includes:
- Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization – Phase 5
- Track Maintenance near Sorrento Valley Station
Though passenger and freight trains will not be operating during the two-day closure, test trains, construction vehicles and heavy equipment will be active along the tracks throughout the weekend.
Officials are urging residents and visitors near the rail corridor to stay alert and only cross the tracks at legally designated crossings.
Periodic weekend closures like this one occur throughout the year to support large-scale improvement projects and preventative maintenance along the coastal rail line.
