Chicago police release details on what led up to high-speed chase, manhunt

Chicago police released new details on what happened moments before a vehicle sped across the city in a dangerous series of events that lasted for nearly an hour before sparking a manhunt for suspects in a Southwest Side neighborhood.

Police said they responded to a call of a burglary around 10:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of North Greenwood Avenue, where a 50-year-old man told police three men broke into the driver’s side door of his vehicle and stole property from inside. The group then entered a different vehicle and fled the scene, police said. No injuries were reported.

About an hour later, police said that same vehicle was seen striking a building and a gate in the 7100 block of South Kedvale. The location is the same spot where a vehicle that had been involved in a high-speed pursuit across the city, was followed by NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter and scene breaking through a gate before crashing into a building.

Three people inside the vehicle were seen fleeing the crash and police said all three were eventually taken into custody.

Authorities said no other injuries were reported and charges were pending against the trio. The vehicle involved in the crash was reported stolen from a previous incident on Dec. 16.

The vehicle was initially being tracked by a Chicago police helicopter as it traveled at a high rate of speed through traffic and major city roadways, at one point traveling the wrong way on DuSable Lake Shore Drive and sparking a crash after exiting the Dan Ryan Expressway.

“We have a high-speed, extremely dangerous pursuit here,” Sky 5 reporter Mike Lorber said while covering the chase.

With the dangerous driving escalating, Chicago police began pursuing the vehicle on the ground and the manhunt for the suspects began.

Several police officers and squad cars were seen flooding the scene near where the occupants of the vehicle fled on foot. A police K9 was also brought in amid the manhunt.

Dozens of squad cars could be seen responding to the area as officers searched for suspects throughout at a residential area.

Footage captured at least two people being taken into custody, one of whom was wearing a mask. It was not clear if those individuals were the same ones involved in the burglary, however.
