Chicago Cubs trade for Edward Cabrera from Marlins, reports say

The Chicago Cubs are making a big splash on the trade market, reportedly making deal for pitcher Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins.

The Cubs’ pursuit was first reported by Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Jon Heyman of MLB Network later confirming the deal.

In exchange, the Cubs are reportedly sending outfield prospect Owen Caissie to the Marlins, along with infielder Cristian Hernandez and third base prospect Edgardo DeLeon.

The Cubs had been seeking a cost-controlled pitcher via trade throughout the offseason, and it appears that they appear to have landed one in Cabrera, who will turn 28 early in the 2026 season.

Cabrera had an 8-7 record with a 3.53 ERA during the 2025 season for the Marlins, with 150 strikeouts and 48 walks in 137.2 innings of work. His WHIP was 1.228, his lowest mark since 2022, and he has maintained nearly 10 strikeouts per nine innings over reach of the last three seasons.

In five big-league seasons, Cabrera has a 25-29 record with a 4.07 ERA, with a 1.309 WHIP.

He is set to earn $3.75 million during the 2026 season, and will be eligible for arbitration for the following two seasons, potentially giving the Cubs three years of control on his contract.

Caissie made his MLB debut with the Cubs in the 2025 season, hitting a home run and driving in four RBI’s for the North Siders.

He hit 22 home runs and drove in 55 RBI’s with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in 99 games during the 2025 season.
