The Chicago area has gotten a bit of a reprieve from snow lately, but that’s going to change with multiple chances of accumulating snow in coming days.
Before that arrives, Chicago-area residents will get one more day of above-average temperatures and sunshine, with highs in the upper-40s and low-50s across the area on Tuesday, according to forecast models.
Slowly but surely, winds are expected to begin shifting out of the north, and the positioning of the jet stream will allow multiple clipper systems to swing by the area beginning on Wednesday morning. The area will see chances of snow in the morning hours, though some locations could see rain if temperatures haven’t cooled enough, but that is merely the opening round of what will be an eventful weather week.
Parts of northwest Indiana will be under a winter storm warning Wednesday and into Thursday, with lake-effect snow bands developing and bringing upwards of 6-to-8 inches of snow to LaPorte and St. Joseph counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Gusty winds in excess of 35 miles per hour could also cause blowing and drifting snow, making for hazardous travel in areas near Lake Michigan.
Back closer to Chicago, the area will see a bit of a reprieve from snow until Thursday, with the possibility of accumulating snow returning to the forecast as snow showers arrive on Thursday evening, according to forecast models.
Another brief round of snow showers could occur on Friday, but again some of that precipitation may fall in the form of rain, as temperatures will likely be right around the freezing mark.
Of course, the thing everyone wants to know is whether there will be snow during the Bears game on Sunday at Soldier Field, and while the exact timing isn’t yet known, there is a possibility of snow in the forecast for Sunday across the entire area.
What’s more, air temperatures are only expected to be in the teens, with wind chills potentially in the single digits for the NFC Divisional Round game, according to extended forecast models.
Temperatures will start to warm slightly headed into the new work week, but once again a possibility of snow flurries or showers could enter the forecast next Tuesday.
