BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Catholic Health announced on Thursday that a tentative four-year contract agreement has been reached with Communication Workers of America (CWA) Locals 1133 and 1168.
The agreement is on six contracts, which covers over 2,800 nurses, service, technical and clerical workers across Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Sisters of Charity Hospital St. Joseph Campus.
It comes after over 90 percent of workers represented by CWA voted in September to authorize a strike vote if a contract deal could not be reached. Workers had asked for safe staffing levels and competitive wages and benefits. They also voiced concerns of security issues, paid time off and having to work overtime due to a lack of staff.
“I want to extend my sincere thanks to the bargaining teams for coming together and reaching this agreement,” said Joyce Markiewicz, the president and CEO of Catholic Health. “This is great news for our patients, associates, and the communities across Western New York that rely on Catholic Health for their care.”
CWA will schedule a ratification vote in the coming weeks, Catholic Health said.
WIVB News 4 reached out to CWA for comment and are waiting to hear back.
