Camden marks lowest number of homicides in 40 years, data reveals

Officials in Camden, New Jersey, are releasing new data that shows 2025 brought the steepest drop in crime to the city in decades.

Homicides were down 29% in 2025 compared to in 2024, according to the newly released data.

Officials say that there were 17 homicides in 2024 and 12 in 2025, marking the lowest total since 1985.

The city also saw year to year declines in several categories including:

  • A 6% drop in violent crime in 2025
  • A 32% drop in sexual assaults
  • A 12% drop in robberies

Since the Camden County Police Department was formed in 2012, the city has seen crime cut nearly in half with a 53% reduction in violent crime.

Since 2012, Camden has seen an 82% drop in homicide cases.

Camden Mayor Vic Carstarphen credited the department’s community policing efforts for building trust with residents and changing the narrative in the city.

“Public safety remains our top priority and it’s the foundation for Camden’s celebrated transformation. We are witnessing tangible progress in every neighborhood citywide,” Mayor Carstarphen said. “There is still plenty of work yet to be done, but through this collaborative effort we are building a safer and healthier Camden.”

New Jersey Congressman Donald Norcross said that this data represents Camden’s continuing progress.

This data comes just days after the city of Philadelphia announced the lowest number of homicides in decades was recorded in 2025.
