CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Each of the past two seasons, the Cambridge/Salem football team suffered brutal losses to Warrensburg/Lake George/Bolton, falling 54-0 in 2023 and 48-0 last year. When the two sides met in Cambridge Saturday afternoon, Doug Luke’s squad was ready to issue some payback.
And that’s exactly what they did. Cambridge/Salem scored touchdowns on its first eight possessions, and delivered a crushing, 61-0 victory, hanging a staggering 55 points in the first half.
The sixth-ranked team in the state for Class D, Cambridge/Salem wasted no time setting the tone, as Jackson Rowland returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Junior quarterback Stephen Yakubec followed that up with three straight touchdown passes, growing the margin to 28 by the conclusion of the first quarter.
Cambridge/Salem turned to the ground game in quarter No. 2, racking up four rushing scores to take a 55-0 advantage into halftime.
Yakubec finished the day 6-of-7 for 101 yards through the air. His three TD strikes went to Rowland, Preston Peabody and Myles Mattson.
Cambridge/Salem collectively ran for 228 yards on 28 carries. Freshman Franklin Ziehm had the biggest workload, toting the rock six times for 22 yards and two touchdowns. Abraham Cushing and Sawyer Saddlemire tied for a team-high 58 rushing yards. Cushing recorded a 39-yard TD scamper, Rowland scored from 29 yards out and Quinten Bentley accounted for the lone touchdown in the second half.
All stats were provided by former Cambridge/Salem standout running back Brice Burr, who was a member of the 2022 team that reached the JMA Wireless Dome for the Class D state championship game.
Cambridge/Salem improves to 6-1 on the year, 5-1 in Class D action and will close out the regular season next Saturday, Oct. 25, with another home matchup against Canajoharie/Fort Plain.
