Cambridge/Salem rolls in Class D playoff rematch

STILLWATER, N.Y. (NEWS10) — In a rematch of the 2024 Class D semifinals, the Cambridge/Salem football team earned a big Week 2 win over Stillwater/Saratoga Catholic, 33-7.

The last time these squads met, Cambridge/Salem came away with a 21-13 victory, advancing to the Class D Super Bowl. Doug Luke’s bunch was looking to improve to 2-0 on the season Friday night, while Stillwater was seeking win No. 1 on the year, and to avenge their playoff loss.

Cambridge/Salem came out swinging. Steven Yakubec connected with Preston Peabody on the outside, who made a man miss and was off to the races. Peabody took it 70 yards to the house to open the scoring.

The defense made a major impact as well. Jacob Wardwell grabbed an interception for Cambridge/Salem late in the first to set the offense up in plus territory. That turnover would lead to another score early in the second quarter, as Yakubec punched one in from a yard out to make it 14-0 after a two-point conversion.

Cambridge/Salem continued to find success with explosive plays, as Yakubec hit Myles Mattson on a short throw, leading to Mattson out-running the defense for a 42-yard touchdown. A missed PAT would send the game to the half at 20-0.

The momentum stayed with Cambridge/Salem out of the locker room. The defense continued their shutout through the third quarter, while Yakubec added another one-yard touchdown. Gus Cushing recorded a 17-yard TD tote for the final Cambridge/Salem score of the night.

Yakubec led the way, going 6-13 through the air for 204 yards and two TDs. He added another two scores on the ground. Cushing carried the ball for 90 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts.

With the win, Cambridge/Salem improves to 2-0 on the year. They return to action on Saturday, Sep. 20, when they host the defending Section 2 Class D champs, Greenwich, at 1 p.m.
