A former member of the Burbank Unified School District was charged for allegedly embezzling government funds, the Burbank Police Department said Thursday.
The investigation began on June 4 when police received information about Charlene Tabet from “personnel” from the school district
The person who reported the possible embezzlement said, according to Burbank police, Tabet awarded her own company Specialized Support Services, LLC, a $90,000 contract to complete a two-year backlog of board meeting minutes in September 2024.
Investigators also learned between December 2024 and May 2025, the school district paid the $93,000 to the vendor, but limited work was completed.
The police department said Tabet signed documents and endorsed checks in her relatives’ name then deposited the payments into her own bank account.
Tabet is facing one felony count of having a financial interest in a contract or purchase made in an official capacity.
She was scheduled to appear in the Los Angeles Superior Court on Oct. 30
Anyone with information about Tabet and the allegations was urged to contact Detective John Voorhis at 818-238-3210.
