The superintendent of a Brooklyn apartment building was killed after trying to fight off someone who was stealing packages in the building lobby, according to police and neighbors.
Police were called about an attack inside the building on Ocean Avenue in Flatbush just after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Responding officers found a man who had suffered head injuries, and he was rushed to Kings County Hospital in critical condition.
The victim, identified by family members as 41-year-old Burim Havolli, later died from his injuries, police said.
According to neighbors, Havolli was the building’s super, and he was attacked as he tried to stop a suspect from stealing packages from the lobby.
The fight leading to Havolli’s death concerned those living in the neighborhood who say the area is getting more dangerous. Meanwhile, the victim’s family was stunned that their hard-working loved one, who was respected in the building and in the neighborhood, was killed while doing his job.
Police were looking into the motivation behind the deadly attack. A person of interest was being questioned, but no charges had yet been filed.
An investigation is ongoing.
