Arrest made, recovery progressing in Hudson animal abuse case

HUDSON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA (CGHS) shared an update on Monday in an animal abuse case. Petal, a female Pitbull that was found abandoned in Hudson back in July, is currently on the mend, and an arrest was made last week in connection to the dog’s neglect.

Petal was located in an alleyway in Hudson on July 31, tethered on a short chain. The dog was emaciated and covered in bodily waste, with no access to food or water.

After weeks of medical attention and care with CGHS, Petal has reached a healthy weight of over 50 pounds, up from 37 pounds when she was first found. Described as gentile and resilient by CGHS members, the organization stated that she was officially adopted on September 13.

During the ensuing investigation, 48-year-old Connell Johnson of Hudson was identified as a suspect of the dog’s abuse, and he taken into custody on September 12 by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with animal cruelty under Article 26, Section 353 of the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law.

“Petal’s story is one of resilience and hope,” CGHS/SPCA President/CEO Ron Perez stated. “Her recovery is a testament to the incredible teamwork between law enforcement and our staff, who work hand-in-hand to protect animals and give them the second chances they deserve.”

“The shelter is so thankful to the community for its continued support. It’s time to celebrate Petal’s happy ending,” CGHS/SPCA Vice President Jessica Farkas said. “While her case underscores the reason that we need strong animal cruelty laws and vigilant, vigorous enforcement, it also reminds us that with care and compassion, healing is always possible.”

Johnson faces up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted. He would also be required to be added to the Columbia County Animal Cruelty Registry, which would legally bar him from owning animals for seven years.
